Module Description: Giving care to individuals living with dementia or a cognitive impairment is challenging.  Ageist stereotypes and misinformation about the capacities of individuals living with a DRD or CI, combined with lack of time and resources make the person-centered approach to care difficult.  And when one adds a pandemic and staffing shortages, it takes the expertise of folks like Sonya Barsness and Karen Stobbe to educate us on how we can be engaged, supportive and productive members of the care team.

Learning Objectives

  • Understanding of how we are more alike than different from individuals living with DRD or CI
  • Differentiating pathological presentation of “behaviors” from usual
  • Best Practices for Environmental modification and identifying unmet needs
  • Using strengths and gifts of individuals living with DRD and CI
